Sony MDR-1AM2 Overview

Styled in black, the Sony MDR-1AM2 are wired, circumaural headphones suitable for use with high-resolution audio formats, delivering an open and lifelike sound where DSD is concerned. The headphones utilize an aluminum-coated LCP diaphragm to deliver a precise sound, as well as silver-coated oxygen-free copper cabling to fight against signal degradation, resulting in finer detail and smoother highs.

Sony claims these headphones provide a frequency response of 3 Hz to 100 kHz, which makes them suited for high-resolution audio formats without coloring the sound by extraneous, upper-frequency filtering. For the low-end, built-in Beat Response Control improves the transient response of the bass registers, so you can feel the music as well as hear it.

Despite their 40mm drivers, these headphones are lightweight at 6.6 oz. They also swivel, packing flat to aid in traveling, and provide soft synthetic-leather earpads for comfort. In addition to a connection cable with a standard 3.5mm stereo plug, the MDR-1AM2 supplies a cable for balanced connections, along with another cable sporting a microphone and an in-line remote. A carry pouch is also included.

Suitable for High-Resolution Audio
With a frequency response purportedly extending from 3 Hz to 100 kHz, these headphones will play music from high-resolution sources without extraneous filtering, resulting in a more open and lifelike sound.
Aluminum-Coated LCP Diaphragm for Precision
An aluminum-coated, liquid-crystal polymer diaphragm gives a consistent and precise sound across the entire frequency range. The upper frequencies of high-resolution audio formats especially benefit from the added rigidity. Also, energy lost during transmission to the headphone housing is more uniform, ensuring a true and authentic performance.
Patterned Grill for Smooth Highs
Grills help to protect the diaphragm and are designed specifically for passing ultra-high frequencies without introducing “color” to the sound. The grill pattern is based on a Fibonacci sequence to ensure no frequency is boosted or cut. The result is a smooth, refined sound right across the frequency range.
Silver-Coated Oxygen-Free Copper
The MDR-1AM2 uses silver-coated oxygen-free copper cables, designed to minimize resistance and signal-transmission loss. This results in less sonic degradation, finer detail, and smoother highs.
Supplied Balanced-Connection Headphone Cable
An included 4.4mm balanced-connection cable separates left and right sound signals completely, unlike conventional headphone cables, which share a ground wire. This minimizes signal transmission loss, so you hear less distortion and cross-talk.
Heavy Bass with Beat Response Control
Built-in Beat Response Control improves the transient characteristics in bass sound and delivers accurate rhythm.
Enfolding Closed-Back Design Seals in Sound
The closed-back, enfolding design wraps around the ear, helping to seal in music and keep distractions out. Meticulously crafted acoustics ensure sound is exclusively directed towards your ears, so you hear even the subtlest of sounds. You’ll also feel every beat, as the closed-back design helps to maximize the bass signatures in your music.
Comfort and Durability
These headphones provide pressure-relieving earpads for comfort, as well as a lightweight design at 6.6 oz, and a swivel construction to make traveling with these headphones a breeze, as they pack flat.
